    Genetics predicts liver cancer recurrence

A U.S.-led group of international medical scientists
says new technology might enable genetics to predict
if a person’s liver cancer is likely to recur. The
technology, developed by the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute in Chevy Chase, Md., allows scientists to
reconstruct thousands of genes that are “shredded”
into tiny pieces when tissue samples are treated with
a chemical fixative and stored in wax — a protocol
commonly used to preserve the samples. The scientists
said they tested the new technique on liver tissue
samples from 307 patients. Using the sophisticated new
microarray technology, the scientists studied RNA from
stored liver tissue samples and identified a tell-tale
genetic profile that indicates whether liver cancer
will recur. The researchers said they are optimistic
oncologists will be able to use such information to
determine which liver cancer patients would likely suf-
fer recurrence and treat them to help prevent it. The
study, which included scientists from Japan, Spain,
Norway and Italy, appeared in the Oct. 15 advance on-
line issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

     MIT finds young planets stay hotter longer

U.S. scientists say they’ve discovered hot, young
planets might be easier to spot than realized because
they remain hot longer than has been thought. The study,
led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor
Linda Elkins-Tanton, revealed that for a few million
years after their initial formation, planets similar
to Earth might maintain a hot surface of molten rock
that would glow brightly enough to make them stand out
as they orbit neighboring stars. Elkins-Tanton said the
“magma ocean” stage for Earth-sized planets might last
a few million years — much longer than previously
estimated. “That means we may actually see them else-
where, as detection systems get better,” she said.
Elkins-Tanton presented her findings last week in
Ithaca, N.Y., during the annual meeting of the
American Astronomical Society’s Division for
Planetary Sciences.

          Oil well hot water used to make power

The U.S. Office of Fossil Energy has announced the first
successful generation of electricity using geothermal
technology from a producing oil well. “This project is
unique in its production of onsite renewable power and
has the potential to increase the productivity and
longevity of existing U.S. oil fields,” Acting Assistant
Secretary for Fossil Energy James Slutz said. The 12-
month test began in September at a Rocky Mountain Oil-
field Testing Center site north of Casper, Wyo. Officials
said the power system being used is a commercial standard
design Ormat Organic Rankine Cycle power plant. The
binary power unit uses hot water from a producing oil
well as the heating fluid for a heat exchanger. In the
heat exchanger a secondary working fluid — an organic
fluid with a low boiling point — is vaporized. That
vapor is used to spin a turbine coupled with a generator
to produce electricity. Output is connected to the field
electrical system to power production equipment, and the
produced energy is metered and monitored for both reli-
ability and quality. Officials said the power plant has
been producing 150 to 250 gross kilowatts of power since
it was first started.
