future.

For example, look at the second story that I have for you
today. Tell me that doesn’t sound like something out of a
sci-fi story. And now it is science fact. Interesting to

——– Patient’s own stem cells may help angina ———

CHICAGO - A U.S. study has shown the first evidence that
stem cells taken from a patient suffering severe angina and
placed into that patient’s heart may lessen pain. The data
came from a six-month, Phase II study led by Dr. Douglas
Losordo at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of
Medicine and director of the Program in Cardiovascular
Regenerative Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
“The results from this study provide the first evidence
that a patient’s own stem cells could actually be used as
a treatment for their heart disease,” said Losordo, a
professor at the school. “The study provides potential hope
for those patients with currently untreatable angina to be
more active with less pain.” Losordo cautioned the findings
of the 26-site trial, while encouraging, are not yet
definitive and require verification in a larger study.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital was the lead site of the
study that involved 167 adult patients. The findings were
presented Saturday in Orlando, Fla., during the American
College of Cardiology’s 58th annual scientific session.

——– Scientists use lasers to kill cancer cells ——–

HOUSTON - U.S. scientists are using computer simulations
to study the effect of heating nanoparticles with lasers
to kill cancer cells without damaging healthy tissue.
Rice University Professor Yildiz Bayazitoglu and doctoral
student Jerry Vera said they hope to raise the efficiency
of destroying tumors by fine-tuning methods of heating
them based on the size and composition of the tumor and
surrounding tissue. The researchers said they found attack-
ing a tumor with two lasers can heat it more thoroughly
than a single laser. For tumors as large as 1 centimeter,
simulations showed opposing lasers surgically inserted via
fiber optics in a minimally invasive procedure produced
the most uniform temperature profile in every case. Lasers
and nanoparticles are already being used to treat cancer,
with a Houston company founded by Rice scientists Jennifer
West and Naomi Halas conducting human tests of a system
that uses nanoshells heated by a near-infrared laser to
kill tumors. Bayazitoglu’s approach would refine such
treatments by taking into account the light-scattering
properties of nanoparticles. His concern is that nano-
particles near the surface of a tumor will block a laser
from reaching those at the center. The research appeared
in the January issue of the International Journal of Heat
and Mass Transfer.

——— Researchers develop microscopy technique ———

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois scientists say
they have created a simple technique for studying what
happens to small molecules when they are stretched or
compressed. The researchers said with stiff stilbene as
a molecular force probe to generate well-defined forces
on various molecules, atom by atom, they can observe what
is widely otherwise observed only by using expensive atomic
force microscopes. “By pulling on different pairs of atoms,
we can explore what happens when we stretch a molecule in
different ways,” chemistry Professor Roman Boulatov said
in a statement. “That information tells us a lot about the
properties of fleeting structures called transition states
that govern how, and how fast, chemical transformations
occur.” The research will be published in the publication
in Nature Nanotechnology. It was posted on the journal’s
Web site Sunday. The technique will help scientists develop
a chemo-mechanical kinetic theory to explain how force
affects rates of chemical transformations, the statement
said. “Localized reactions offer the best opportunity to
gain fundamental insights into the interplay of reaction
rates and molecular restoring forces, but these reactions
are extremely difficult to study with a microscopic force
probe,” Boulatov said.
