Mars volcano may supply water clues
U.S. scientists say the 15-mile-high Olympus Mons
volcano on Mars might answer the question of whether
that planet ever had, or still has, water. Rice
University Assistant Professor Patrick McGovern and
Associate Professor Julia Morgan used an algorithm
to analyze the volcano’s structure. They determined
that only the presence of ancient clay sediments
could account for the volcano’s asymmetric shape –
and the presence of sediment indicates water was, or
is, involved. Olympus Mons slopes gently from its
foothills to the caldera, a distance of more than
150 miles. The researchers say that shallow slope is
a clue to what lies beneath. They said that if they
were able to start digging on the northwest side of
Olympus Mons, they probably would eventually find
clay sediment deposited there billions of years ago.
Their research is detailed in the journal Geology.

Scientists learn to ‘declaw’ plutonium
Engineers at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
in Israel say they have developed a way to “declaw”
nuclear fuel, ensuring only peaceful plutonium use.
The engineers said their technique “denatures” pluto-
nium created in large nuclear reactors, making it un-
suitable for use in nuclear arms. They said that by
adding Americium, a form of the basic synthetic ele-
ment found in commercial smoke detectors and indus-
trial gauges, plutonium can only be used for peaceful
purposes. Professor Yigal Ronen, who led the research,
said if the United States, Russia, Germany, France and
Japan agreed to add the denaturing additive into all
plutonium, it would affect other nations now develop-
ing nuclear power. “When you purchase a nuclear reactor
from one of the five countries, it also provides the
nuclear fuel for the reactor,” said Ronen. “Thus, if
the five agree to insert the additive into fuel for
countries now developing nuclear power — such as
Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Namibia,
Qatar, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and
Yemen — they will have to use it for peaceful pur-
poses rather than warfare.” The research is to be re-
ported in next month’s issue of the journal Science
and Global Security.

Study IDs joint replacement device problem
Rush University Medical Center scientists in Chicago
say they have identified an immunological reaction
that leads to early failure of joint implants. Although
the majority of the more than 600,000 total joint re-
placements performed in the United States annually are
successful, in as many as 10 percent of cases the metal
components loosen, requiring the patient to undergo a
second surgery, the researchers said. The study found
the loosening is often caused by localized inflamma-
tion, an immune reaction to tiny particles of debris
from the components themselves as they rub against one
another. No infection is involved. “As soon as joint
replacement devices are implanted, they begin to cor-
rode and wear away, releasing particles and ions that
ultimately signal danger to the body’s immune system,”
said Associate Professor Nadim Hallab, the study’s
author. The scientists said their finding marks the
first time that it has been shown that such debris and
ions from implants trigger an immune response. The
study that included Marco Caicedo, Ronak Desai, Kyron
McAllister, and Drs. Anand Reddy and Joshua Jacobs is
available online in the Journal of Orthopaedic Re-
search and is to appear in the journal’s June issue.
