New Wind Energy Funding Announced
Thursday, April 30th, 2009Good Morning,
I think I’ll keep things brief today so we can get right
into the science and the possibilities.
Until Tomorrow,

——— Chu announces new wind energy funding ———–
GOLDEN, Colo. - Secretary of Energy Steven Chu says his
department will provide $93 million to support development
of wind energy in the United States. Chu announced the
plans Wednesday during a visit to the National Renewable
Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. The money will come
from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as will
more than $100 million for infrastructure improvements at
the NREL facility. “Wind energy will be one of the most
important contributors to meeting President Obama’s target
of generating 10 percent of our electricity from renewable
sources by 2012,” Chu said. “The projects funded by this
opportunity will advance wind technology so that it can
reliably supply a substantial portion of our nation’s
electricity. They will also help in creating more new jobs
and expanding a clean energy economy.” Included in the
funding projects are enhancements of current and next
generation wind turbine drive-train systems; improvements
of the quality and use of lighter advanced materials for
turbine blades, towers and other components, and creation
of a National Wind Technology Center. Chu said wind energy
is among the fastest growing energy technologies in the
United States, with the U.S. now leading the world in wind
energy generation and new wind energy capacity.

———- Gamma-ray burst sets distance record ———–
WASHINGTON - The U.S. space agency says its Swift satellite
has found a gamma-ray burst from a star that died when
the universe was only 630 million years old. The National
Aeronautics and Space Administration said the event
occurred when the universe was less than 5 percent of its
present age and is the most distant cosmic explosion ever
seen. “Swift was designed to catch these very distant
bursts,” said Swift lead scientist Neil Gehrels at NASA’s
Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. “The
incredible distance to this burst exceeded our greatest
expectations — it was a true blast from the past.” The
10-second-long gamma-ray burst was detected at 3:55 a.m.
EDT Thursday. Astronomers around the world quickly aimed
their telescopes at the event. At the Galileo National
Telescope on La Palma in the Canary islands, a team
including Guido Chincarini of the University of Milan-
Bicocca, Italy, determined the burst occurred more than
13 billion light-years away. “It’s an incredible find,”
Chincarini said. “What makes it even better is that a
telescope named for Galileo made this measurement during
the year in which we celebrate the 400th anniversary of
Galileo’s first astronomical use of the telescope.”

——– Genetic marker may ID head, throat cancer ———
CORVALLIS, Ore. - U.S. scientists say they have discovered
a genetic regulator that might help lead physicians to
an earlier diagnosis of head and neck cancers. Pharmacy
researchers at Oregon State University said the genetic
regulator is expressed at higher levels in the most
aggressive types of head and neck cancers and might even
offer a new therapy at some point in the future. The
“transcriptional regulator” is called CTIP2, and in recent
research it’s been demonstrated to be a master regulator
that has important roles in many biological functions.
But in the study, scientists found for the first time that
levels of CTIP2 were more than five times higher in the
“poorly differentiated” tumor cells that cause the most
deadly types of squamous cell carcinomas in the larynx,
throat, tongue and other parts of the head. They discovered
a high correlation between greater CTIP2 expression and
the aggressive nature of the cancer. “Serious head and
throat cancer is pretty common, and mortality rates from
it haven’t improved much in 20 years, despite new types of
treatments,” said Assistant Professor Gitali Indra. “With
these new findings, we believe it should be possible to
create an early screening and diagnostic tool to spot
these cancers earlier, tell physicians which ones need
the most aggressive treatments and which are most apt to
recur.” The study appears in the online journal PLoS One.
