Swine Flu Search Widens
Wednesday, April 29th, 2009Good Morning,
Swine flu. That’s right, swine flu. It’s all over the news
and you couldn’t avoid hearing about it if you tried.
Today, I just have an article about the ongoing investi-
gation into this health crisis. Also, learn about the use
of 3-D technology in a prostate cancer study and use of
antifungal drugs in space.
Until Tomorrow,
Erin

——- 3-D used to study prostate cancer spread ——–
BRISBANE, Australia - Australian scientists say they are
studying the spread of prostate cancer to the bones using
a three-dimensional model of tissue-engineered bone. Shirly
Sieh, a doctoral student at the Queensland University of
Technology’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation
said she is studying the way cancer cells escape from the
prostate through the bloodstream to form tumor colonies,
most often in the spine and long bones. “It is an
innovative study which uses a tissue engineering platform
technology developed by IHBI’s Professor Dietmar Hutmacher
in order to investigate the interaction between bones and
cancer cells,” Sieh said. “Tissue-engineered bone provides
the 3D architecture for the cancer cells (that) more
closely resemble bone metastasis instead of growing the
cancer cells and bone cells on a flat Petrie dish.” She
said it is still not clear how bones and cancer cells
interact, so she is growing prostate cancer cells on the
tissue-engineered bone to observe those interactions. Sieh
said scientists want to understand why prostate cancer
cells are attracted to bone sites. She and doctoral
student Amy Lubik, who is supervised by Professor Colleen
Nelson, are also studying the effect the cancer cells in
the bones have on male hormone production, particularly
on the hormone androgen.

———– Swine flu search widens in Texas ————-
HOUSTON - Six cases of swine flu have been confirmed in
Texas with at least another 27 cases awaiting confirmation,
state health investigators said. Three cases were confirmed
in Dallas as of late Monday with another three cases
confirmed in Guadalupe County, said Dr. Sandra Guerra,
the medical director overseeing the state investigation.
It’s highly probable that seven of the 27 cases awaiting
confirmation are swine flu, The San Antonio Express-News
reported Tuesday. Memorial High School in nearby New
Braunfels was ordered closed Monday because a teacher
who lives in Guadalupe County was one of the probable
cases, the Express-News reported. More than a dozen
schools in Texas have been ordered closed, Guerra said,
noting those patients with confirmed cases of swine flu
are expected to recover.

——– NASA to study antifungal drugs in space ———
WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. - The U.S. space agency says it
plans to launch a small satellite about the size of a
loaf of bread to study how effectively drugs work in
space. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration
nanosatellite, known as PharmaSat, is a secondary payload
aboard a U.S. Air Force four-stage Minotaur 1 rocket
planned to be launched May 5. “PharmaSat weighs approximate-
ly 10 pounds,” NASA said. “It contains a controlled
environment micro-laboratory packed with sensors and
optical systems that can detect the growth, density and
health of yeast cells and transmit that data to scientists
for analysis on Earth. PharmaSat also will monitor the
levels of pressure, temperature and acceleration the yeast
and the satellite experience while circling Earth at
17,000 miles per hour.” Space agency scientists will study
how the yeast responds during and after an anti-fungal
treatment is administered at three dosage levels to learn
more about drug action in space. “PharmaSat is an important
experiment that will yield new information about the
susceptibility of microbes to antibiotics in the space
environment,” said David Niesel, PharmaSat’s co-
investigator from the University of Texas Medical Branch.
“It also will prove that biological experiments can be
conducted on sophisticated autonomous nanosatellites.”
The Minotaur 1 rocket will lift off from the Mid-Atlantic
Regional Spaceport located at Wallops Island, Va.
